The month of May has been a big one when it comes to Indiana football recruiting.

After suffering a tough loss with the decommitment of 4-star CB Monsanna Torbert Jr. earlier this month, Curt Cignetti has responded with a recruiting hot streak. Cignetti and the Hoosiers have secured commitments from five 2027 prospects in the last two weeks, and IU's newest pledge steals some recruiting momentum away from a Big Ten competitor.

4-star EDGE Myles Smith commits to Indiana

On Thursday afternoon, Indiana received a commitment from 4-star EDGE Myles Smith, who announced his decision live on the Rivals YouTube Channel.

Smith hails from Farmington, Michigan, and is ranked as the No. 7 overall player in the state of Michigan and the No. 26 EDGE in the country according to Rivals. Kyle Whittingham and the Wolverines have been on a recruiting heater lately, so getting one of the top players in the state of Michigan to head to Bloomington is a big win in more ways than one for Cignetti.

Whittingham's recruiting heater consists of landing nine total commitments over the last three weeks. Michigan's 2027 recruiting class currently features 14 players, and 10 of those 14 prospects are blue-chippers. Furthermore, Michigan boasts six commits that rank in the top 125 overall according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. The class is headlined by 4-star OT Jakari Lipsey, who is ranked as the No. 2 player in the state of Michigan and No. 9 offensive tackle in the country.

Earlier this spring, the Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine gave Michigan a slight lead with a 24 percent chance of landing Smith. However, Cignetti was able to swoop in and get Smith on campus for an official visit on May 15 which seems to have gone extremely well. Now, Cignetti securing a commitment from Smith gives Michigan a tough blow.

Indiana's 2027 recruiting class now features eight players

Smith is the eighth prospect to join Indiana's 2027 recruiting class. He is the first EDGE to join the class, and the 6'5" 215-pound playmaker has IU continuing to move in the right direction on the recruiting trail.

Indiana is slowing creeping up in the national recruiting rankings, as the Hoosiers have moved up from No. 52 to No. 43 in the 247Sports recruiting rankings over the last week. It's not the final spot where Cignetti wants to be, but the momentum is continuing to build.

Cignetti and the Hoosiers are also still in the running for Monshun Sales, who is a 5-star prospect and the No. 1 WR in the 2027 class according to 247Sports. Landing Sales would undoubtedly take Indiana's 2027 recruiting class to new heights.
