The Indiana Hoosiers football program has reached unprecedented heights under Curt Cignetti. The Hoosiers found instant success with Cignetti at the helm, and that success reached a historic level with a National Championship-winning season in Year 2 of Cignetti's tenure.
Over the last two seasons, Indiana's rosters haven't been full of blue chip recruits. Instead, Cignetti has placed a major emphasis on finding the right players as opposed to the best players. Talent is still obviously rather important, but Cignetti has shown that he doesn't need a roster full of 4 and 5-star prospects to find resounding success.
As Cignetti and his staff continue building for the future, Indiana'a latest commitment is an ideal fit for Cignetti's philosphy.
Indiana lands commitment from 3-star CB Rico Jackson
Over the weekend, Indiana secured a commitment from 2027 cornerback Rico Jackson. The 5'11" 175 playmaker is rated as a 3-star prospect and ranked as the No. 117 cornerback in the country and No. 26 player in the state of Maryland for the 2027 cycle, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking. He chose Indiana over other offers from Wisconsin, Pitt, and Virginia Tech, among others.
Jackson is the fifth member of Indiana's 2027 recruiting class, which also features 4-star CB Monsanna Torbert Jr, 3-star QB Jameson Purcell, 3-star LB Garyon Hobbs, and 3-star OT Jeremiah Jones. Jackson's addition continues Cignetti's recruiting philosophy of finding under-the-radar players to develop in Bloomington.

Jackson's pledge to Indiana isn't going to make national headlines as a home run commitment. But Cignetti doesn't care about that.
Just because a recruit has a 4 or 5-star ranking next to his name doesn't mean everything is going to go as planned. The rating doesn't define them. Other schools across the country put a large emphasis on those ratings, but Cignetti just wants to find the right players for his methodology.
Cignetti and his staff have shown they have an elite eye for talented players, and putting those players in the best positions to succeed. Look no further than last year's National Championship-winning team.
Curt Cignetti has plenty of defensive back success to point to
Three of Indiana's five recruits in the 2027 class, three are defensive back prospects. Torbert is the headliner, as he is rated as a 4-star prospect and ranked as the No. 16 cornerback in the country and the No. 116 overall prospect in the country. Jackson's addition brings another talented playmaker loaded with potential.
Cignetti has shown that he can develop defensive back talent in Bloomington. Most notably, CB D'Angelo Ponds emerged into a superstar in the Hoosier defensive backfield this past season. He played a huge role in Indiana's CFP run, and was recently selected in the 2nd Round with the 50th overall selection by the New York Jets in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Cignetti undoubtedly used that success to pitch everything the IU program has to offer to Jackson during his collegiate career. As the Hoosier head coach continues to build IU's future recruiting classes, Indiana fans have plenty of faith in his philosophy.
