Indiana's storybook season culminated with a 27-21 victory over the Miami Hurricanes in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. The victory gave the Hoosiers one of the most historic titles in college football history, as Curt Cignetti quickly turned IU from an afterthought to a national power.

After the Hoosiers and Hurricanes met in last year's title game, the two programs are now battling for top talent on the recruiting trail. Over the weekend, Cignetti and company landed a commitment from 4-star LB Jalaythan Mayfield, and handed Mario Cristobal and the Hurricanes another tough loss in the process.

4-star LB Jalaythan Mayfield chooses Indiana over Miami and Georgia

When it came down to decision time, Mayfield was choosing between a list of finalists that included Indiana, Miami, and Georgia. Miami and Indiana were considered to the two favorites for a while, and Cignetti was able to win out in the end.

After announcing his commitment live on CBS Sports YouTube Channel, Mayfield had plenty of great things to say about Cignetti and the Hoosier football program.

“It’s a great place," Mayfield said. "Coach Cig does a great job with the players. They take 3, 2-star guys, unranked guys, and make them national champions, so that’s the place to be developed.  Miami, Georgia, great programs, they develop players as well, but nobody does it like Indiana.”

That kind of praise has Hoosier fans fired up. Cignetti's ability to find and evaluate talent is what makes Indiana so dangerous. Cignetti doesn't need a roster full of blue chip recruits to win it all. But after the remarkable success he's seen in Bloomington, the Hoosiers are now on the radar of 4-star prospects like Mayfield. With Cignetti leading the way, Indiana has plenty of staying power both on the gridiron and on the recruiting trail across the country.

Jalaythan Mayfield is a major get for Indiana's 2027 recruiting class

Mayfield's commitment to Indiana is significant. The 6'2" 235-pound prospect is ranked as the No. 20 linebacker in the country and the No. 9 player in the state of North Carolina by Rivals. He was one of the most sought-after defensive players in the 2027 recruiting cycle, and now he is Bloomington bound.

Mayfield owns an overall rating of 90.65 according to Rivals. That makes him the highest-rated prospect in Indiana's 2027 recruiting class. He is the fifth blue chip prospect to commit to IU in the 2027 cycle, joining 4-star OT Mason McDermott, 4-star EDGE Myles Smith, 4-star DL Reinaldo Perez, and 4-star WR Branden Sharpe. He joins an Indiana recruiting class currently ranked No. 33 in the country by Rivals.

Last season as a junior at Lincolnton High School in North Carolina, Mayfied racked up 152 tackles, 26 tackles for loss, 6.0 sacks, and 6 forced fumbles. He also blocked a punt and a field goal as a member of the special teams unit.
