Nobody needed a monumental upset this weekend than Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano. The Scarlet Knights have continued to go downhill in Schiano's second stint in Piscataway, and he needed a huge win over the 6th-ranked Hoosiers to get back into the good graces of the Rutgers fan base.

3 winners and 2 losers from Indiana's dominant road win over Rutgers in Week 5

But that didn't happen. Instead, the Curt Cignetti-led Hoosiers completely dominated the Scarlet Knights from start to finish. Indiana out-gained Rutgers 593-294 and had little trouble finding the end zone en route to a lopsided 47-15 victory. With the win, Cignetti and the Hoosiers just pushed Schiano further onto the hot seat.

Indiana's blowout win over Rutgers is bad news for Greg Schiano

Schiano's second stint at Rutgers has not been nearly as successful as the first. During his first stint with the Scarlet Knights, Schiano led the program to many memorable seasons. He was there from 2001-2011, and saw a strong peak from 2006-09 in which Rutgers collected 8+ wins in four straight seasons. Schiano led Rutgers to 11 wins in 2006 which culminated in a Texas Bowl win over Kansas State and led to the Scarlet Knights finishing the season ranked No. 12 in the AP Poll.

Schiano left for the NFL in 2011, and returned to the college ranks as Ohio State's defensive coordinator from 2016-18. Looking to restore some of the magic from his first stint, Rutgers brought him back as head coach in 2020.

But since returning to Piscataway, Schiano and the Scarlet Knights have struggled mightily. Rutgers has won more than three Big Ten games just once (2024) since Schiano's return, and entered the 2026-27 campaign with low expectations. But with that being said, Schiano's team has still disappointed.

Rutgers started the season by losing to UMass as a three-touchdown favorite, and hasn't been able to find any momentum since then. After getting blown out by Indiana on Saturday night, the Scarlet Knights are now 1-4 on the season with their lone win coming against Howard. Now in Year 7 of his second stint at Rutgers, Schiano's Scarlet Knights are just 15-41 in Big Ten play since his return in 2020. Given how Rutgers has performed this season, it's fair to say that Schiano is firmly on the hot seat.

Rutgers is now entering a bye week, and it will be interesting to see if Schiano is able to get things somewhat back on track. A winnable game on the road at Maryland is on the docket for Oct. 17, and Schiano won't do himself any favors by losing that game. Maryland is 2-3 on the season, which includes a 54-3 loss to first-year UCLA head coach Bob Chesney two weeks ago. Terrapin head coach Mike Locksley's job security is also shaky at this point in time, so that could end up being a monster game for both head coaches.
