CBS Sports honored the late and great Greg Gumbel on NCAA Tournament Selection Sunday show

The face of March Madness and CBS Sports host Greg Gumbel died of cancer on December 27th at the age of 78. Gumbel was honored by the college basketball world and the CBS crew during the network's Selection Sunday epiosde for March Madness.

"He passed away peacefully surrounded by much love after a courageous battle with cancer,"Gumbel's family said in a statement to CBS. 'Greg approached his illness like one would expect he would, with stoicism, grace, and positivity. He leaves behind a legacy of love, inspiration and dedication to over 50 extraordinary years in the sports broadcast industry; and his iconic voice will never be forgotten."

On Sunday, CBS Sports’ Seth Davis posted a picture of the CBS studio crew wearing Rolling Stones shirts as the British Rock n Roll Hall of Famers were his favorite band.

Seth Davis a co-host of the show and longtime friend of the 25 year analyst had this to say about Greg Gumbel.

“He knew that life is short and laughter is vital,” Davis about Gumbel. “He figured that if you showed up, tried your best and treated people well, then nothing else mattered. He was a unique talent, a treasured friend and the kindest man I have ever known.”

Gumbel was a sports broadcaster covering over 25 years for networks such as ESPN, NBC and CBS, as well as other networks. At CBS, he was most known for his coverage of the NCAA Tournament, but he also called NFL games as an announcer from 2006-2023 on Sunday's. He was also a play-by-play broadcaster for CBS at the College World Series from 1990-94 and 2000-02. 

Gumbel is survived by his wife Marcy and daughter Michelle, as well as his brother and fellow journalist Bryant.

Adam Zucker, Seth Davis, Clark Kellog and Jay Wright are now the CBS March Madness crew on set.

The NCAA Tournament will begin this Tuesday with the First Four before first-round games begin on Thursday.

The Indiana Hoosiers fans would like to say thank you to Greg Gumbel for his outstanding sportscasting and hosting skills over the years, he was the face and voice of March Madness and we will truly miss him this year and forever.
