Is freshman Trey Galloway going to start for Indiana Basketball?

Yesterday, CBS Sports college basketball analyst Jon Rothstein dropped what total Indiana basketball nerds would call a bombshell:

There’s a lot to speculate from this one tweet. Obviously, the validity of these moles could be called into question, but I’m willing to bet whoever it is provides Rothstein with the truth.
It’s unclear from the tweet if these moles are the ones claiming Galloway could potentially be a starter or if that is a prediction from Rothstein. Either way, the claim is interesting enough to discuss.

Justin Smith transferring to Arkansas was a blessing in my mind. Smith was an elite defender when he wanted to be (which he rarely did), but was completely useless in halfcourt offense. His transfer made way for more talented offensive players such as Jerome Hunter to come in and play more minutes.

I’m a huge Hunter proponent and think he could be the second-best player on the roster by the end of the season. However, it would appear Trey Galloway may completely destroy that prediction.

We know that Galloway is as gritty as they come and plays with effort that will always make his coach happy. Archie Miller tends to be a sucker for these qualities, so that could be majorly playing into the freshman’s favor. It is also possible that Hunter may not be seizing the opportunity to be a starter like he should, and has potentially lost his spot to Galloway.

We also can’t rule out the potential of Galloway and Hunter both starting at the three and four. That idea works brilliantly in my mind, but the lineups I deem to be brilliant typically go completely unused by Miller.

If Galloway was indeed named as the starting small forward for Indiana, it would completely subvert all my expectations for the lineups on this team. I have written articles predicting Indiana’s lineups, from the reasonable to the completely absurd. I never even considered adding Galloway to even the most ridiculous of those made-up lineups.

With the opening tip of the 2020 basketball season inching closer, this will be a story to keep an eye on. If Galloway is able to be the game one starter at small forward, it would speak volumes about him as a player and raise expectations of his career to new heights.
