3. Indiana Defense Not Close To Where It Needs To Be

This is now another week of talking about the defense and the inconsistencies with their play. It is not only the schemes, but also some of the players.

Indiana struggled, and has struggled, to get constant pressure in the opposing team’s backfield and that creates a huge problem for any defense, but especially one with a secondary that has failed to live up to expectations for the year.

Not only is the Indiana secondary getting gashed left and right, but at times it seems they are so out of position that they aren’t even sure what the defensive play call was.

Tiawan Mullen has been a bright spot in the secondary this season, but still just a freshman, he is going to make mistakes and can’t be relied on to be that lockdown guy every single play. Though I say that, he has been extremely consistent this season and hasn’t had many letdowns.

With only four interceptions on the season, Indiana ranks last in the Big Ten and 121st in the NCAA, as well as given up the fourth most passing touchdowns in the conference.

While the run defense has been good for most of the season, teams have started to become one-dimensional on their own and become strictly a pass only team against Indiana, shown by Shea Patterson’s 366 yards through the air and five touchdowns on Saturday.
