With the Indiana basketball program trying to finish off its 2020 recruiting class in style, will that come at the expense of a big man or point guard?

Much of the talk over the past few months has been circulated around whether or not Indiana basketball will land a point guard in the 2020 class. Archie Miller has been adamant about wanting to add another ball handler to the mix, but signs seem to be pointing otherwise.

Just a few weeks ago Indiana was involved in the recruitment of five point guards, but just like that, Caleb Love dropped IU from his list, Cam Hayes committed to N.C. State, and signs don’t seem as strong for Carter Whitt to reclassify to 2020. That leaves Archie Miller with just two options at the moment.

The Hoosiers did get ‘good’ news by being included in top-60 point guard Andre Curbelo’s top-5, but there isn’t a ton of traction when it comes to the recruitment of the Puerto Rico native. WIth Miami, Illinois, Oregon, and St. John’s included, the current Long Island Lutheran (NY) guard may realistically have a top-2 of Illinois and Miami.

Curbelo has yet to take any official visits, and with those being planned out, IF the Hoosiers can get him on campus, all bets are off, as we saw what happened with Jordan Geronimo earlier this year, but IU has to get him to Bloomington first.

As for the other point guard, Hassan Diarra, their recruitment of the PSA Cardinal point guard is a lot further along than that of Curbelo’s.

More from basketball recruiting

Diarra will be on campus this weekend for an official visit, his second after visiting Georgia last week, and the Hoosiers have a shot at landing the four-star guard.

One team the Hoosiers will have to beat out is Georgia. The Bulldogs have done a terrific job at prioritizing Diarra and the allure of the NBA and Tom Crean’s development of guards has Diarra intrigued.

"“Georgia, Coach Crean’s message to me is that he wants to make me an NBA point guard,” said Diarra of the Bulldogs. “He talks to me about how he will help me improve and get better, and ultimately live my dream of being an NBA player.”"

Indiana will know a lot more about where they stand with Diarra after this weekend’s visit. Though he has one more visit planned to Texas A&M in October, If I had to pick, I would guess Diarra ends up with Crean down in Georgia, following a very good trip a weekend ago.

If that is the end result, it’s not all bad for the Hoosiers. With Rob Phinisee still expected to be the starter and a senior Al Durham, who Archie Miller said will play more point guard this season, those two should see the majority of the minutes with 2020 commit Trey Galloway as another name that sees some spot minutes at the one. All of this would leave ample opportunity for 2021 PG Khristian Lander to land in Bloomington.
