Indiana Basketball: Hoosiers offer 2021 four-star, possible reclass in mind
By Alec Lasley
Another member of the 2021 class received an offer from the Indiana basketball program on Thursday and Mike Roberts could have his hands all over it.
It is a busy time for Indiana basketball as it is currently hosting 2020 four-star forward Jordan Geronimo for an official visit, as well as waiting on a possible commitment from another four-star in the class, Matt Cross. That hasn’t stopped Archie Miller and co. from continuing to work on future classes, however.
North Carolina class of 2021 point guard Carter Whitt was extended an offer on Thursday and could be partly due to the early work of newly appointed assistant coach Mike Roberts, the former UNC-Greensboro assistant.
Whitt is a four-star guard who is ranked top-60 nationally and does bring with him the possibility of reclassifying into the 2020 class, he previously told Rivals’ Corey Evans.
"“I could if I wanted to,” he said. “If I have the right situation, I think it wouldn’t be bad because I have been playing high school basketball since seventh or eighth grade so there is only so much you can do in high school.”"
Despite Indiana just putting its hat in the race for Whitt, he does bring an intriguing situation if the two parties have mutual interest moving forward.
As the Hoosiers already have two 2020 commitments from backcourt players with Anthony Leal and Trey Galloway, the possibility of adding another one could be an interesting topic. Next year Rob Phinisee will be just a junior and while the importance of adding another true point guard is crucial, it could be an interesting dilemma if IU adds that missing piece in 2020, not 2021.
As publicity noted, Archie Miller and the Indiana staff has made 2021 point guard Khristian Lander the top priority for the program moving forward. While Lander and the family have made it known that there is interest between the two, the Hoosiers have to show the ability to start winning. Adding another point guard to the mix could be a slight hindrance on Indiana’s chances with Lander as well.
However it may move forward, Whitt is an interesting prospect who would fit the toughness mold and message that Archie Miller is preaching..
247Sports Analyst Brian Snow described Whitt’s game.
"Based on appearance he is going to draw comparisons to former Virginia point guard Ty Jerome, but Whitt is a bit different. Still, like Jerome, Whitt can really make plays. Whitt has fantastic floor vision, is a good athlete going to the rim, and has a tremendous feel for the game. While Whitt isn’t a great long-range shooter, he still is able to attack of the bounce, and once he is in the lane he is as good as it gets at getting the ball to an open shooter, dumping it off to a big for a dunk, or creating space for himself."
Whitt holds offers from Virginia, Maryland, Ohio State, Florida, NC State, Clemson, Tennessee and Boston College, amongst others.
