The Indiana basketball program has found its new assistant coach to replace Ed Schilling, and he brings Indiana ties with him to Bloomington.

The search seems to be over for Archie Miller and the Indiana basketball program as a new assistant coach has been found. Announced today, the Hoosiers are expected to reach a deal with UNC-Greensboro associate head coach Mike Roberts.

There had been rumblings from Indiana insider Jeff Rabjohns late Tuesday night that Roberts was the guy, but nothing was very much publicized.

Roberts has been on the bench of a D1 program since 2005, but spent the past eight seasons with UNC-Greensboro as the associate head coach.

Roberts’ resume includes the previous four years before UNC-Greensboro as an assistant coach at Rice and a stop at Cal for two seasons as well.

His ties to Indiana run deep however. The Terre Haute, Indiana native spent four years as part of the Indiana basketball program from 2001-2005 as a player and was a member of Indiana’s 2002 NCAA Runner-Up team. He was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten Conference selection and earned the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award in 2005, when he was a team captain his senior season.

After graduating from IU, Roberts took his talents to Texas Tech as a graduate assistant under Hall of Fame coach Bob Knight.

During his time at UNC-Greensboro, under Roberts’ guidance and coaching, three players earned Southern Conference honors this past season.

Sophomore guard Isaiah Miller was named Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Year, while he joined senior guard Francis Alonso on the SoCon First-Team. Junior forward James Dickey was also named a SoCon Third-Team selection.

During his coaching career, Roberts has been part of a coaching staff to produce three NBA Draft picks, including Ryan Anderson (Cal) to the Orlando Magic in 2008 (21st pick), Devon Hardin (Cal) to the Seattle Supersonics in 2008 (50th pick) and Arsalan Kazemi (Rice) to the Washington Wizards in 2013 (54th pick).

While many people have questioned the hire, Roberts will make a great addition to the staff. Not the “sexy” pick but Roberts has done a tremendous job at his past stops. Remember, this is for a third assistant coaching position and Roberts will rank amongst the top for that position.
