Indiana Basketball: Hoosier targets in action on Nike EYBL circuit this weekend
By Alec Lasley
It was another busy weekend on the AAU circuit as many Indiana basketball targets were in action at the EYBL event.
In another star studded weekend on the EYBL D1 Circuit, many Indiana basketball targets showcased their skills and continued to make a name for themselves.
After missing on a couple of late signees in the 2019 class, Archie Miller and staff have now turned their focus to the 2020 and 2021 classes in order to build one of the best classes in the country.
While names like Anthony Leal, Trey Galloway and Khristian Lander were not playing this weekend, there were still a handful of players who were in action.
With the first Indiana target off the board in the 2020 class when Ethan Morton committed to Purdue last Thursday, some of the names below will be crucial targets in the coming months.
Matt Cross (BABC)
In what was another terrific weekend for the 6-foot-7 forward, Cross’ play will be followed up by an official visit to Indiana at the end of May.
Ranked 13th in the EYBL in scoring average this season, Cross put three games of over 20 points, including a 30-point performance in their weekend opener against AOT Running Rebels (GA). In that game he shot 11-of-25 including hitting five threes. A versatile forward who can score in many ways, he also had a game in which he went 9-of-9 from the line, going 16-of-19 on the weekend.
Three double-doubles for Cross also included 19 offensive rebounds in his four games, with a single game high of five in two different games.
Weekend Stats: 22.8 points, 9.0 rebounds, 32 percent fg, 27.8 percent 3pt
RJ Davis (NY Renaissance)
One of the names who have continued to impress this spring, Davis continued his stellar play this weekend.
Getting off to a terrific start right away, Davis put up 27 points in their opener which included a 14-of-20 performance from the free-throw line. He also shot 6-of-11 from the field leading the way in the win.
After, he had a few inconsistent shooting performances, but shot the ball well from deep, finishing 43 percent (9-of-21).
Weekend Stats: 21.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 2.3 steals, 47.8 percent fg
Caleb Love (Brad Beal Elite)
Love is one of the bigger Indiana recruits that was in action this weekend and was fairly consistent.
Scoring 18 points twice and 19 points another game, Love did struggle in their second game when he finished with just eight points on just 3-of-11 shooting, but made up for it in other ways. He chipped in with two steals and 10 assists in what was their lone win on the weekend.
Weekend Stats: 15.8 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 40 percent fg, 28.3 percent 3pt
Nijel Pack (Indy Heat)
Somewhat of of late bloomer, Pack followed up his breakout performance he had in the first weekend with another quality event.
Though he didn’t have any breakout scoring games, he scored in double-digits all four games and had to fight through shooting struggles. With three games shooting less than 32 percent, Pack found success at the free throw line, going 21-of-24 on the weekend.
Finding other ways to impact the game since his shot wasn’t falling, he had a nine rebound game as well as nearly 3-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio, with games of seven and eight assists. He also chipped in seven steals on the weekend.
Weekend Stats: 16.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 33.1 percent fg, 22.8 percent 3pt
Donovan Johnson (All Ohio Red)
A big riser in the last couple of weeks, Donovan Johnson continued his great shooting this weekend.
With a 31-point outing in their third game, Johnson went 11-of-15 from the field including 8-of-10 from three. As streaky as they come, he also had two games in which he 6-of-23 from three as well.
Still not much of a playmaker at this stage, he had just one assist on the weekend.
Weekend Stats: 17.0 points, 3.8 rebounds, 42.1 percent fg, 39.5 percent 3pt
Terrence Clarke (Expressions Elite)
A class of 2021 target, Clarke is one of the best prospects in the country in any class.
With an extremely consistent weekend, Clarke scored between 13 and 17 points and took either 13 or 15 shots in all four games. Going undefeated on the weekend, Clarke stuck to what was working for him and didn’t force too much.
He continued to be a force on the boards and showcased his versatility on the offensive end with his playmaking ability.
Weekend Stats: 15.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 44.5 percent fg
Caleb Furst (Indy Heat)
Again, another class of 2021 target, Furst saw his performances dwindle at times depending on which teams he went up against.
His best game coming in their third matchup of the event, he dropped 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting with eight rebounds. It was a nice bounce back for Furst who struggled with just five points and zero rebounds against the Georgia Stars in their second game.
Weekend Stats: 13.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, 54.6 percent fg
