The Indiana Hoosiers only hope for a tournament bid was being successful in the Big Ten Tournament this weekend. One win was not enough to get the Hoosiers a late bid this year.

The 2016-17 Indiana Hoosiers season has not been the story most would have wrote in November. After picking up two of the best wins in college basketball this season, the Hoosiers did not receive a bid to the 2017 NCAA Tournament.

Indiana finished the season with 18-15 with a 7-11 record in the conference. Indiana’s only hope for a tournament bid fell short on Friday night when they lost to Wisconsin in the quarterfinals. We saw a spark from the Indiana offense against Iowa on Thursday, but that spark did not last long. A team that was being talked about as a potential Final Four contender at the start of the season has now stumbled their way into another season missing out on the big dance.

Many can point fingers at the head coach of the team for the downward spiral of this season. Others will point out the number of injuries Indiana faced throughout the season including a critical loss to the Hoosiers O.G. Anunoby after a season-ending knee injury in January.

More from Indiana Basketball

This is the second time in four seasons that the Hoosiers will miss out on playing in the NCAA Tournament. The speculation of head coach Tom Crean’s job security will be one of the main topics of conversation this off-season.

The National Invitational Tournament is where we will likely see the Hoosiers playing their post-season games in March. One of the interesting points about the NIT is whether or not the Hoosiers will actually play in the tournament. It could be evident if the Hoosier decline that they will be making a switch in head coaches heading into next season. The Big Ten has already seen one shake up in head coaches when Illinois fired John Groce on Saturday afternoon.

Next: What really makes sense for Indiana and Tom Crean

Will Tom Crean be the next head coach to be pushed out of the Big Ten? That remains to be seen and we might have a better idea when the NIT Selection Show is presented on Sunday night. The NIT Selection Show will take place at 8:30 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
