Former Indiana Hoosiers guard Yogi Ferrell impresses with Dallas Mavericks

Yogi Ferrell signed a 10-day contract with the Dallas Mavericks last week. The Hoosiers former standout point guard has put NBA teams on notice recently.

Yogi Ferrell has spent much of his NBA rookie season on the move. The former Hoosier went undrafted in the 2016 NBA Draft but was signed by the Brooklyn Nets at the start of the season. After playing in 11 games for Brooklyn, he bounced around the D-League before being cut from the Nets in January.

The opportunity for another shot in the NBA came last week for Ferrell. The Dallas Mavericks came calling after injuries to Derron Williams and J.J. Barea. Ferrell worked out for the team and eventually signed a 10-day contract with Dallas.

Some initial praise for Ferrell’s play came from Dallas Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle. Since the signing, The Mavericks are 4-0 including wins against the San Antonio Spurs and the Cleveland Cavaliers. He combined for 28 points, ten assists, seven rebounds, and six steals in his first two starts.

Ferrell’s most impressive game came against the Portland Trailblazers Friday. In 39 minutes, he posted 32 points on 11-for-17 shooting. He was nearly perfect from three, going 9-for-11 from beyond the arc. He has become one of the most talked about players in the past few days by NBA experts and players.

The type of performance Yogi Ferrell showcased on Friday earned him a 2-year contract with the Mavericks.

Yogi Ferrell, in his final season with Indiana basketball, carried his team to a Sweet Sixteen appearance. He was a part of two Big Ten Conference Championships in 2012-13 and 2015-16 seasons. His legacy at Indiana is stamped by being one of the best passers in recent history. He passed Michael Lewis (545) for the record of all-time career assists with Indiana (633). He holds the record for most points produced by any player in the Big Ten Conference since the 1993-94 season (2,075 points).

Yogi Ferrell is now one of five active NBA players to come from Indiana basketball in the last ten years including Eric Gordon (2007-08), Cody Zeller (2011-13), Victor Oladipo (2010-2013), Noah Vonleh (2013-14). Ferrell shared the floor at Indiana with four of the five active NBA players. One of Ferrell’s former teammates, Troy Williams, has spent some time with Memphis Grizzlies as well.
