Ranking Indiana's Five Championship Seasons.
By Dante Pryor
#4 1952-53:
The 52-53 team was the second of Coach McCracken's National Championship teams. By this time, the tournament had grown to 22 teams. After a 17-1 regular season record, the Hoosiers accepted an invitation to participate in the National Tournament. The most notable part of the regular season was Indiana's two dominant wins against Purdue, winning by an average of 24 points.
Future NBA players Bobby Leonard, Dick Farley, and Don Schlundt led this Hoosiers squad. This run would not be as dominant as the '40 team, but this team had to win more games. They found themselves playing Kansas again in the title game.
The Hoosiers won a tight game against DePaul in the East Regional Semifinal 82-80. They followed that performance with two comfortable wins against Notre Dame in the Regional Final and LSU in the National Semifinal.
The Hoosiers would win the National Title by one point, defeating legendary coach Phogg Allen and a guard by the name of Dean Smith.
