One horrific no-call dooms Indiana vs. Northwestern with March Madness looming

Indiana Hoosiers fans should be looking back on this controversial no-call with the utmost disgust.

It may have come down to the wire, but the Indiana Hoosiers played with their food all night and got caught in a bad spot up against the clock vs. the lowly Northwestern Wildcats. The absolute worst thing that could have happened for Indiana's NCAA Tournament chances occurred at Assembly Hall on Tuesday night. Falling at home to Northwestern 72-68 will go down as a Quad 3 home loss for IU...

The play everyone is talking about is a controversial missed call on Tucker DeVries' 3-point attempt.

As you can see both on the replay clip, and in the featured image of this article..., Northwestern's Angelo Ciaravino put his hand on DeVries' left forearm as he sort of attempted a desperation heave from distance. Indiana was only down three points inside of 10 seconds. DeVries had made all three of his attempts from the charity stripe in the game. For a game that Indiana needed to win, this stinks.

Indiana has fallen to 17-11 overall and 8-9 in Big Ten play heading into its final three Big Ten contests.

Indiana Hoosiers get screwed by the refs on blown Tucker DeVries no-call

There is no way around it. This has been a no good, very bad last week and change for Indiana basketball. Darian DeVries' team plummeted from a No. 9 seed to a No. 11 seed in the most recent Bracketology update from Tuesday morning. To say the Hoosiers have come crashing back to Earth would be a gross understatement. Indiana needs to win its final three games to get to 20 on the year.

Because this is a Quad 3 home loss, the only non-Quad 1 loss on the season for Indiana, the Hoosiers will certainly need to counterbalance with either a Quad 1 win down the stretch over Michigan State at home, or Ohio State on the road to end the season. A win over Minnesota at home in a Quad 2 may not cut it for IU. If Indiana does not get to at least 18 wins this regular season, they have no real shot.

Of course, Indiana could conceivably make up ground based on what it does in the Big Ten Tournament. Then again, this is a team with a sub-.500 mark in league play, one that has made a killing beating up on the dreck of the conference not named Northwestern... The fact Indiana has only gone 2-10 vs. Quad 1 opponents does not help the Hoosiers' case at all. The Purdue win seems like a fluke.

Right now, the ire of the Indiana faithful falls on the officials in this one, as well as on Darian DeVries...
