There are levels to this. No doubt, the best two teams in college football so far are the two that have not lost yet in the No. 1 Ohio State Buckeyes and the No. 2 Indiana Hoosiers. Fate would have it, one of them is going down on Saturday night, as they will meet in the Big Ten Championship Game. While the loser will still get a first-round bye, the winner will be the No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff.
Of course, Ohio State fans want it all, but they cannot have it... Look no further than Indiana's star quarterback Fernando Mendoza beating out Ohio State signal-caller Julian Sayin for two of the Big Ten's highest honors: The Graham-George Offensive Player of the Year and the Griese-Brees Quarterback of the Year. If Indiana beats Ohio State, guess who will be winning the Heisman Trophy?
Ohio State has a great team, but what Mendoza has meant for Indiana football cannot be quantified.
A multi-award winner!

Although Hoosiers head coach Curt Cignetti knows Indiana is closing the gap on Ohio State, the Buckeyes are still a 4.5-point favorite over IU at neutral site Lucas Oil Stadium on Saturday night. To be quite frank, Indiana has been a little bit more battle-tested than Ohio State has been this season, but there are still pundits out there who are critical of what they have actually had to navigate so far.
For now, Mendoza is only one more game away from being the greatest player in program history.
Ohio State fans are not happy about Fernando Mendoza over Julian Sayin
Look. For as great of a story as Diego Pavia has been for Vanderbilt, the fact the Commodores are not going to make the College Football Playoff will largely prevent him from winning the Heisman Trophy. While Jeremiyah Love's Notre Dame Fighting Irish remain above the cut line for the time being, all it may take is for BYU to lose to Texas Tech again for Miami to potentially leapfrog them.
Although Love and Pavia are both deserving of being Heisman Trophy finalists, the winner will come from this year's Big Ten Championship Game. If Sayin outplays Mendoza in an Ohio State victory, it will likely be the Ohio State quarterback. Should Indiana be steady as she goes and hand the Buckeyes their first loss of the season, Mendoza will be the first Heisman winner in Indiana history.
For now, Mendoza is likely to garner more and more accolades as award season comes along because he is an upperclassman. Sayin is not yet eligible for the NFL Draft, while Mendoza is probably the first player taken next spring by a team that is in desperate need for a quarterback. Again, if Sayin outshines Mendoza, it will be his Heisman Trophy for the taking. But if it is close, Mendoza will win it.
Let's see who will come out on top in Indianapolis to be the No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff.
