Spring football is underway in Indiana, and the Hoosiers held their second practice this week, one of many they will hold this spring. This is year two under head coach Curt Cignetti and while he said last year was a little more chaotic in spring, he feels he has a firm grasp on how it should go this year.
There are 33 new faces on the field for the Hoosiers this spring, between players who joined the team from the transfer portal and high school recruits who chose to enroll at Indiana early. So, of the roughly 80 players in the spring ball, over 40% of them are new faces, which means seeing what exactly their talents are and perfecting them for the season in the fall.
One new face a lot of people are very excited to see is quarterback Fernando Mendoza, a transfer from Cal, who honestly was having his talents wasted with the Golden Bears. Mendoza made the best with what he had at Cal, but without a solid offensive line to protect, his numbers, while still great, could have been better.
Cignetti made sure he was going to protect his quarterback this year, and he went out and got the players to do so, one being offensive lineman from Notre Dame, Pat Coogan. Coogan comes to Indiana as a four-star transfer and will be a solid blocker for the young Mendoza.
In spring, though, everyone wants to see how Mendoza throws the ball, how his accuracy is, and definitely what his arm strength is. Well, Mendoza is showing just that, and with the latest video posted by Indiana football's social media team, Hoosiers fans are smiling ear to ear at what they are seeing.

In the video, Mendoza doesn't have any rushers coming at him, but he drops back and throws a beautiful deep ball to wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr., who catches the ball inside for the touchdown.
Mendoza put the ball right on the money where Cooper needed it away from the defense to knock it away. The throw was perfect, and not much else can be said about it other than this kid has a lot of potential, and with Cignetti as his coach, he will reach it.
