Indiana Hoosiers junior starting quarterback Fernando Mendoza has been named one of eight quarterbacks as a Star of the Week by the Manning Award, and the Manning Award Quarterback of the Week by the Allstate Sugar Bowl announced earlier this week.
Mendoza earned the honor over seven other Manning Award Stars of the Week in the Allstate Sugar Bowl’s online fan voting contest.
The other top quarterback finalist included: Trinidad Chambliss (Ole Miss), Carlos Del Rio-Wilson (Marshall), Josh Hoover (TCU), Brendon Lewis (Memphis), Chandler Morris (Virginia), Kaidon Salter (Colorado), and Demond Williams (Washington).
The Manning Award is sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl and includes just eight quarterbacks as its "Stars of the Week" finalists. The award was created to honor the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting. Since the Manning Award started recognizing Stars of the Week in 2011, 578 different quarterbacks from 136 schools have been recognized. A total of 74 players were honored during the 2024 season.
Mendoza was also named the Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week. For the season, Mendoza is second nationally in completion percentage at 76.8% and leads the nation in touchdowns with 14 on the season so far. He has not thrown an interception, and his 206.16 passer rating is second nationally.
His week 4 was outstanding as he torched No. 9 Illinois for five touchdowns on 21 of 23 passing in Indiana's 63-10 beatdown of the Fighting Illini.

All the Manning Award winners follow in the footsteps of the Mannings themselves. In college, Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning combined for over 25,000 passing yards and 201 touchdowns while playing in 10 bowl games and earning four bowl MVP awards. Archie was the No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft, while both Peyton and Eli were selected No. 1 overall.
