We had a chance to sit down with Jameson and chat with the Indiana commit about what his junior seasons goals are, his reasoning for signing with Indiana, his relationship with IU's staff and much much more.
Hoosier State of Mind: What were the main factors that made you fall in love with Bloomington and the Indiana football program?
Jameson Purcell: There really isn’t anything that I don’t love about Indiana and its program! I visited a ton of top tier programs but in the end, IU just covered so many of my “must haves” in choosing a school - a strong football program, great academics, a top tier staff that I really connected with, a social scene and being from the Midwest, it’s close enough to home that my family and friends can come to games. It just felt like home every time I went to visit.
2. Hoosier State of Mind: What is your relationship like with offensive coordinator Mike Shanahan and quarterback coach Coach Chandler Whitmer ?
Jameson Purcell: They both have been amazing! I have really connected with both of them and they have been very supportive throughout my recruitment. They really encouraged me to go out and shop around so that when I circled back to IU, I would know 110% that it was the best place for me. I am in constant contact with them and it’s been great to learn from them and hear their own experiences with football and different schools. They really made me feel wanted without any pressure.
3. Hoosier State of Mind: Who are some NFL quarterbacks you model your game after ?
Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow and Caleb Williams from the Chicago Bears.
4. Hoosier State of Mind: Being a class of 2027 recruit and rising junior what made you want to commit early in the recruiting process ?
Jameson Purcell: The 2027 class has A LOT of amazing QBs and I knew that the competition would be tight for all the top schools. I have worked really hard to get here and feel really lucky to be where I am at to be ranked among so many great athletes and friends. I just knew that Indiana was a good fit for me so when the opportunity came up, I just didn’t want to miss out on the chance to play for their program and Coach Cignetti.
5. Hoosier State of Mind: Jameson, what does it mean to be the first Indiana recruit committed to the 2027 class ?
Jameson Purcell: I am always working on something to fine tune my own mechanics. I want to set a new passing record for myself as I am always competing with my own record. As a team, our goal is to win a state title for sure. I play for a big program that has won many state rings but it’s been a few years since the last one, and I can’t wait to do it with the guys I have literally grown up with.
6. Hoosier State of Mind: What are your team as individual goals for this upcoming season ?
Jameson Purcell: It’s definitely very exciting! I am honored to be the first in my class and know that I have big shoes to fill. I hope to help bring in other 27’s and get a buzz going for our recruiting class.
7. Hoosier State of Mind: How does your skill set fit this offensive scheme?
Jameson Purcell: My skill set fits because I am an athletic QB and can play both pro style and spread. I am able to extend plays and have the arm strength to press the ball vertically.
8. Hoosiers State of Mind: Alright time for some quick hits, Favorite pre game meal?
Jameson Purcell: I usually do some bison or beef with rice and veggies, or a big turkey sandwich and something like orange slices!
9. Hoosiers State of Mind: Most lit pregame hype song ?
Jameson Purcell: I have a lot of go to songs. Probably something by rappers OT7Quanny or Chucky right now…
10. Hoosier State of Mind: Celebrity crush?
Jameson Purcell: Way too many to name haha...
11. Hoosier State of Mind: Favorite non-football athlete of all time ?
Jameson Purcell: Michael Jordan
247Sports‘ Hudson Standish wrote the following scouting report on his profile:
Athletic southpaw with streamlined delivery mechanics and a confident play style who wins with timing at the first two levels and by extending action outside the pocket. Verified hovering around 6-foot-1, 190 pounds following a prolific sophomore season where he led Maine South to the third round of the IHSA 8A playoffs as a first year starter. Above-average arm talent and will hit his marks when operating on schedule to the deeper third. Creative runner who can move the chains in the designed QB run game or create for himself when the play breaks down. Quick release and ability to adjust arm slot make for a lethal combination when working quick game. Turns 18 years old in September of 2025. Should be viewed as a dynamic signal-caller with fine-tuned mechanics and a solidly built frame entering his junior season.
