The Washington Commanders drafted Nate Sudfeld in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft out of Indiana. The 31 year old, Modesto, California native has appeared in six career NFL games, throwing for 188 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, with his last his last pass coming in 2022.
Sudfeld has spent time in the NFL with the Washington Commanders, Philadelphia Eagles, Detroit Lions and San Francisco 49ers (twice).
Sudfeld is now the second Indiana quarterback on the 49ers' roster, joining Kurtis Rourke, who started for the Hoosiers last season. Rourke is currently on the Non-Football Injury List (NFI) due to the torn ACL he sustained in 2024, which he played through during his lone campaign in Bloomington.
Sudfeld will join a quarterback room that has former Hoosier Kurtis Rourke, Carter Bradley, Mac Jones and starting quarterback Brock Purdy. Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reported that backup quarterback Mac Jones is not at practice after appearing to injury a knee in Saturday’s preseason game.
According to 49ers OnSI, "The 49ers have been searching for a quality third-string quarterback all offseason. They have Brock Purdy, their franchise quarterback, plus they have Mac Jones, a backup quarterback with starting experience. But they don't have anyone notable behind those two. At first, the 49ers had Tanner Mordecai, but he struggled in training camp. So the 49ers signed Carter Bradley, the son of 49ers assistant head coach Gus Bradley, but he struggled in the preseason games."
The 6-foot-6, 227-pound Sudfeld, who started 26 of his 37 appearances, is Indiana's all-time leader in passing yards (7,879) and passing touchdowns (61).
According to Indiana Athletics, Sudfeld also left the Indiana Hoosiers ranked first in 350-yard games (6), 300-yard games (11), 250-yard games (13), 200-yard games (19), four-touchdown games (5) and three-touchdown games (10).
