Curt Cignetti has brought a whole new culture to Indiana...a winning culture.
Cignetti's brass personality of letting his play talk for his team brought this team to new heights with the most wins in a single season and their first College Football Playoff appearance. A big reason for Indiana's success was their offense, which took a big step forward from 2023 to 2024. In 2023, the Hoosiers averaged just 333.7 yards per game, and in 2024 averaged almost 100 more yards with 426.4 yards per game.
The Hoosiers are hoping to improve even more in 2025, and it all starts with Cignetti's latest addition to his coaching staff. Cignetti announced the hiring of Chandler Whitmer as the Hoosiers news quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator. Whitmer is replacing Tino Sunseri, who was hired to be UCLA's newest offensive coordinator.
Whitmer comes to Indiana with a lot of experience working with some high-profile quarterbacks in the NFL. The former UConn quarterback has worked with former Ohio State quarterback Justin Field and former Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence as they were preparing to enter the NFL and also helped Los Angeles quarterback Justin Herbert and Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. become starters in the NFL.
"I am fired up to join Coach Cignetti, Coach Shanahan, and the Hoosiers program," Whitmer said in his introductory press conference. "What they did this past season in such a short amount of time was tremendous, and the future is incredibly bright. I am excited to learn from everyone, bring some things from my experiences, and develop the quarterback position."
The young quarterbacks coach started his coaching career at Yale as a graduate assistant and had other stops at Ohio State and Clemson. From 2021 to 2023, Whitmer was an offensive quality control assistant with the Los Angeles Chargers and spent the 2024 season with the Atlanta Falcons as a pass game specialist.
Whitmer is coming to the Hoosiers at the perfect time as they just landed Cal quarterback transfer Fernando Mendoza, who is primed to replace star quarterback Kurtis Rourke, who is heading to the NFL in 2025.
