âLong time Athletic Trainer for Menâs Basketball at Indiana University, Tim Garl, was informed by Athletic Director Scott Dolson, that his contract will not be renewed for his 45th basketball season. Dolson informed Garl that he would like a âfresh startâ for the IU Basketball Sports Medicine staff. His last day is Monday.
ââGarl feels grateful for the incredible opportunities he has had during his career having served every head coach starting with Bob Knight. He finds it a blessing that a kid from Elkhart, IN could be fortunate enough to participate in both collegiate and international competitions. Timâs enduring legacy includes being at every IU basketball game for 44 seasons.
Garl has been Indiana's basketball athletic trainer since 1981 when he was hired by legendary head coach Bob Knight. He was a part of one national championship at Indiana and eight Big Ten championships with the Hoosiers over that time span.
Garl's decades of work at Indiana saw him work under head coaches Bobby Knight, Mike Davis, Kelvin Sampson, Tom Crean, Archie Miller and Mike Woodson.
The former athletic trainer Garl, is being accused of turning a blind eye to sexual abuse in previous year by Dr. Bradford Bomba Sr., who they allege performed medically unnecessarily rectal exams on the young men.
Plaintiffs' attorney Kathleen DeLaney said her clients asked the university to remove Garl this past summer.
"I mean, unless the university issues a statement to that effect, I don't know what their decision making process was," she told NBC News on Tuesday. "All I can tell you is, we asked them to exit Tim Garl and they launched an investigation. We added Mr. Garl to the lawsuit as a defendant, and shortly thereafter, he was terminated."
Garl has been a guest speaker at both national and international Basketball and Sports Medicine clinics. He has wrote many articles both in the US and Europe, and he published a book on Strength and Conditioning for basketball players. The training facility at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall is currently named after Garl.
