Tom and Dick Van Arsdale led Indiana in the early 1960s and both went on to have successful NBA careers. Tom was a member of the 1966 All-Rookie team after averaging 10.5 points for Detroit.

He really excelled later in his career on Cincinnati when he was an All-Star for three consecutive years. In his first two All-Star seasons, 1969-70 and 1970-71, he averaged over 22 points per game on 46% shooting.

Tom played 15 seasons in the NBA between Cincinnati/Kansas City, Detroit, Atlanta, Philadelphia, and Phoenix.
