The transfer portal for college sports, specifically football and basketball, has become one of the most common routes for college athletes to take, and that’s no different for Tom Allen and the Indiana football program after back-to-back losing seasons.
As of December 14, 2022, there are more than 1,300 FBS players with their names entered in the transfer portal intending to transfer from their previous school to another. If you really took a deep dive into the numbers, my guess is that every FBS school has at least one player transferring out after the 2022 season.
The Indiana football program has gone 6-18 (.250) over the past two seasons after a magical run in 2020. Thus, the transfer portal has hit Bloomington, and it’s hit it very hard these past couple of weeks:
Indiana football players in the transfer portal:
- Dasan McCullough – LB
- Connor Bazelak – QB
- A.J. Barner V – TE
- Josh Sanguinetti – DB
- Jack Tuttle – QB
- Randy Holtz – OL
- Malachi Holt-Bennett – WR
- Chris Keys – DB
- McCall Ray – WR
- Charles Spegal – RB
- Richard Thomas Jr. – DL
- Charles Campbell – K
- Lem Watley-Neely – DB
- Brett Wethington – RB
- Grant Gremel – QB
Along with the transfer portal, some of the Hoosiers’ best players have also entered their names into the 2023 NFL Draft and are forgoing their extra years (if they have them) of eligibility.
Indiana football players entering names into NFL Draft:
- Tiawan Mullen – CB
- Cam Jones – LB
- Jaylin Williams – CB
- D.J. Matthews Jr. – WR
- Devon Matthews – DB
- Bradley Jenning Jr. – LB
- Shaun Shivers – RB
- James Head Jr. – DE
- Bryant Fitzgerald – DB
- Lance Bryant – DE
- Luke Haggard – OL
- Parker Hanna – OL
- Demarcus Elliot – DL
- Chris Bradberry – OL
- Christian Harris – WR
- Jonathan Haynes – DB
Some of the positive returning players for Indiana football in 2023 are the return of Jaylin Lucas, Josh Henderson, Cam Camper (if healthy), and Dexter Williams II (if healthy).
Nevertheless, Tom Allen has a lot of work to do to get his Indiana football roster back in order. Will the Hoosiers rebuild in Bloomington for 2023 or will we see another down season again for the football program?
