Indiana basketball career stats: 18.2 PPG, 3.5 AST, 2.5 3PM, 48.1 3P%
In his sophomore season, Jay Edwards finished second in the Big Ten in scoring and fourth in scoring average, with 20.0 points per game and knocked down 2.4 three-pointers per game on 44.8 percent shooting. Edwards had one of the more memorable moments in Indiana basketball history when he hit the game-winning three-pointer to take down No. 13 Michigan in February 1989.
Though he only played in four NCAA Tournament games, Edwards averaged 16.0 points, 2.7 3PM, and shot 55.0 percent from behind the arc. In 1988-89, Edwards led the Hoosiers to a 27-8 record and despite a not-so-talented roster, Indiana basketball reached the Sweet 16 that postseason.
Edwards earned Big Ten Rookie of the Year in 1987-88, then followed his freshman year with winning Big Ten Player of the Year in 1988-89, along with First Team All-Big Ten honors and Second Team Consensus All-American honors.
Despite only playing two seasons for the Hoosiers, Edwards ranks in the top 10 in the following statistical categories for his career and single-season efforts:
- Points per game: 18.2 (9th)
- Assists per game: 3.5 (8th)
- Points (single season): 680 in 1988-89 (9th)
- Three-pointers made (single season): 81 in 1988-89 (tied for 5th)
- Three-point percentage (single season): 53.6% in 1987-88 (1st)
- Free throw percentage (single season): 90.8% in 1987-88 (3rd)
His NBA playing career was cut short after getting drafted 33rd overall by the Los Angeles Clippers in the 1989 Draft due to a suspension for substance abuse. Edwards’ career in Bloomington is well worth considering to continue our top 20 countdown.
