Indiana basketball career stats: 23.3 PPG, 9.1 RPG, 45.6 FG%, 94 GP

Taking his freshman season out of the picture, Don Schlundt averaged 25.2 points and 9.8 rebounds in three seasons, including 25.4 points and 8.5 rebounds in the 1953 NCAA Championship season. Schlundt racked up awards in his career in Bloomington being honored as a three-time first-team All-Big Ten selection and three-time Consensus All-American selection.

Though he played in the 1950s, Schlundt is ranked in the top 10 in the following statistical categories for career and single-season numbers and could be considered one of the best players in Indiana basketball history:

  • Points: 2,192 (3rd)
  • Points per game: 23.3 (1st)
  • Field goals made: 683 (7th)
  • Field goal attempts: 1,497 (5th)
  • Free throws made: 826 (1st)
  • Free throw attempts: 1,076 (1st)
  • Total rebounds: 860 (7th)
  • Total rebounds per game: 9.1 (9th)
  • Points per game (single season): 26.0 in 1954-55 (3rd), 25.4 in 1952-53 (5th), & 24.3 in 1953-54 (8th)

  • Free throw attempts (single season): 310 in 1952-53 (1st), 299 in 1954-55 (2nd), 296 in 1953-54 (3rd)

After his illustrious career in Bloomington, Schlundt was taken 16th overall in the 1955 NBA Draft by the Syracuse Nationals but never played in a game due to NBA teams not paying enough at the time. Schlundt held the Indiana basketball scoring record for 32 years before it was broken by Steve Alford in 1986-87.
