After another sad loss for the Indiana football program, we try to focus on the positives and highlight some key players from homecoming weekend.

Let’s just say it was tough to come up with three members of the Indiana football program that deserved a nod from the performance in the game against Michigan. The defense did it’s job until it couldn’t hold on any longer, and the offense had little-to-no highlights in the game. Considered adding Josh Henderson or Emery Simmons as potential key players, but not enough significant impact on the game to earn a key player nod.

Week 6 stats: 9 total tackles, 8 solo tackles, 1 TFL, 1 INT

Along with the interception from the tipped ball in the third quarter, Matthews stepped up big in the running game by helping to limit Blake Corum (video below). The senior defensive back had to step up in a big way with Jaylin Williams missing in the secondary due to injury, along with Cam Jones, who will be missing for multiple weeks with an injury.

This is tied for the second-most total tackles in a game for the senior, the most since he had 12 total tackles against Maryland in October 2021. Matthews also recorded his fourth career interception, and it came at a very important moment for the Hoosiers defense. Tom Allen’s defense will need Matthews to step up if they have any chance to win games in the coming weeks.
