Indiana basketball recruiting: Elite 2023 guard DeShawn Harris-Smith visits Indiana
Elite 2023 guard, DeShawn Harris-Smith, from Fairfax, Virginia visited Bloomington from July 28 – July 30 before his senior year at St. Paul VI Catholic High School. Harris-Smith is considering Indiana basketball, among four other schools, for his college decision that should be coming soon.
The 6-foot-5 guard has now visited Indiana, Penn State, Xavier, Villanova, and Maryland, which are the schools that are recruiting him the most, as he made clear in his conversation with The Daily Hoosier about his official visit at Indiana. Harris-Smith mentions how he would “like to be done by the end of August” when it comes to other visits and committing to a school, which should be exciting for Hoosier fans as we’ve already signed two other four-star guards from the 2023 recruiting class (Jakai Newton & Gabe Cupps). Harris-Smith also talks about his mom and her impact on his college decision:
"“She (Harris-Smith’s mom) has been on every visit with me, and after Indiana, she was saying that she definitely feels like she could drop me off there and feel like I’m being taken care of. She said she could sleep easily knowing that I’m at Indiana because she knows that the people there really care about you and want to see you succeed both on and off the court.”"
The Virginia guard is an elite shot-maker and finisher at the rim and should be higher ranked than his 247Sports Composite ranking of 19th among shooting guards in the 2023 recruiting class. As seen from his Capitol Hoops Mixtape, the left-hander can facilitate and handle the ball as a primary ball-handler but also has the ability to make shots at all three levels, especially going to his left and even in the post.
Evaluating a talent like DeShawn Harris-Smith is pretty simple, as the lefty guard gives glimmers of an R.J. Barrett and Donovan Mitchell combination that could turn into a special player, along with a sleeper NBA Draft pick after a couple seasons at a Big Ten school where he can add muscle and play alongside and against some of the best players in college basketball.
