4. Vanderbilt

Geographically this makes a little sense and that is where it ends with the Commodores. The Big Ten already has its top tier academic school and that is Northwestern. No disrespect to the other Big Ten schools as they are all great academically but Northwestern is widely considered the top of the group.

There is zero gain for the Big Ten to add Vanderbilt to the conference. Its football team is not a great program. Their basketball has struggled mightily. They do bring in a great baseball team but let’s be honest, conference realignment is driven by football with basketball being an afterthought. The rest of the sports just deal with it.

Vanderbilt does bring in a good market in Nashville, but it still isn’t as good as some of the other ones they could go after. So there really isn’t much going for Vanderbilt.

They are a great school and the Big Ten could definitely do worse, but this just wouldn’t make any sense. Bringing in Rutgers made more sense then it would to bring in Vanderbilt.
