Indiana Basketball: Analyzing recruits, Aminu Mohammed

When 5-star recruit Aminu Mohammed arrived in America in 2015, he came looking for a brighter future athletically and academically. He’s found both. He moved in with his guardian Shawn Harmon and immediately got to work growing his game.

In his Sophomore year, his hard work paid off as he won Missouri’s Gatorade Player of the year after averaging 34 points, 17.5 rebounds and almost three steals a game. Mohammed has also proved to be a good student as he maintained a 3.46 GPA at a highly touted academic academy. He did not slow down in his Junior year as he put up very similar numbers. He is currently ranked as a top 15 recruit in the country by every major recruiting service.

The 6’4″ Nigerian wing’s game is smooth and multi-dimensional. Mohammed is an explosive athlete who routinely dunks all over people. However, don’t be fooled as there is a lot more to Mohammed’s game than just athleticism.

He has a smooth and consistent jumper that he utilizes both in the mid-range and from beyond the arc. A new addition to his game, Mohammed excelled as a pull-up shooter from three in his junior year. He is also excellent in transition as he uses his long strides and excellent IQ to weave his way to the basket.

Mohammed puts the effort in on the defensive end and is a quality rebounder. While his ball-handling is good, a tighter handle would allow him to find his spots easier which would open all sorts of doors for his development. Mohammed is also consistently praised for his work ethic, in fact, Harmon recently told StockRisers that Miller has said that Mohammed’s work ethic is one of the best he’s seen from a High Schooler. High praise.

Currently, Mohammed is being heavily chased by four or five other schools outside of Indiana. Those schools include Louisville, Maryland, Pitt, Kansas State, and Georgetown.

At the moment, it seems as though Louisville is probably the team to beat, however, both Mohammed and his guardian have said multiple times that they are in no rush to make a commitment and that they believe the right program will still be there at the end. Based on everything I have seen and read, I would not be surprised if the Hoosiers are battling for Mohammed until the end.

Mohammed took an unofficial visit to Bloomington in late January as IU and Maryland competed at Assembly Hall.
