Indiana Basketball: The 10 best Indiana Hoosiers in NBA history: 10-5
By Zach Breton
#5 & #6: Tom and Dick Van Arsdale
Let me start off by saying that twins Tom and Dick Van Arsdale had freakishly similar careers. They were both named Indiana Mr. Basketball, both played for Indiana, both played from 1965-197, both played for the Suns, and I could keep going but I won’t. You get the point. The twins both made big impacts on their teams in the ’60s and ’70s.
Tom Van Arsdale played for a plethora of teams during his NBA career but made he made a name for himself with the Cincinnati Royals. With the Royals, He made three straight all-star appearances with his first coming in 1970. Tom’s lasting legacy is that he holds the NBA record for most games played without a playoff appearance at 929 games.
Dick, probably the more famous of the two, played with the Phoenix Suns during his prime and was known as the “The Flying Dutchman” due to his incredible athleticism and finishing at the rim. Dick made all-star appearances in three straight seasons for the Suns starting a year earlier than his brother in 1969. He also managed to sneak onto an all-defensive team in 1974. Dick Van Arsdale averaged 17.6 points over his Phoenix career. After his playing career ended, Dick went on to work in the front office with the Suns. His number five jersey is retired in Phoenix.
