Indiana Basketball: The 10 best Indiana Hoosiers in NBA history: 10-5
By Zach Breton
#7: Eric Gordon
Eric Gordon came into his freshman year at Indiana with monumental expectations as he had been the best player in his high school class. His one and done season with the Hoosiers ended up being a disappointing one for the team as Coach Sampson was tied up in a recruiting scandal and eventually was let go during the season. Gordon ended up putting up decent numbers in his lone campaign with the cream and crimson. He averaged over 20 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.4 assists. Gordon also set many freshman scoring records for the Hoosiers.
After the season ended, Eric Gordon entered his name in the NBA draft. His reputation going into the draft was that he was a guy that could heat up instantly and score in bunches. Gordon was selected seventh overall by the Clippers in the 2008 draft. Gordon found instant success with the Clippers, averaging 16.1 points, 2.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.0 steals per game. His scoring output was third among rookies. For his accomplishments, Gordon was unanimously selected to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team.
A few seasons later, Gordon’s true breakout would come. In 2010-11, he finished the season as the Clippers’ second-leading scorer, with 22.3 points per game. He also averaged 2.9 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game. After the season, Gordon was part of a giant trade package that landed Chris Paul in LA and sent Gordon and many others to New Orleans.
Houston has been Gordon’s home for the past 5 seasons and he has been very successful with the Rockets. After his first season in Houston, Gordon was named Sixth Man of the Year after he played as an instant-offense piece of the bench for the contending Rockets. In 2017-18, Gordon was a crucial piece of the Rocket’s offense as they took the super-team Golden State Warriors to seven games in the Western Conference finals.
Gordon has scored 10,991 points to date over his long career. I don’t expect to hear about financial issues with Gordon due to the fact that he has amassed 109 million dollars in salary and that’s before accounting for the MASSIVE contract that Gordon recently signed with Houston.
