Indiana Basketball: Four potential lineups after Justin Smith’s transfer
Modern
Rob Phinisee
Khristian Lander
Al Durham
Jerome Hunter
Trayce Jackson-Davis
If Archie Miller committed to a fully modern, floor spacing, shooting, and athletic lineup, this would be the one to go to. I actually love it.
The offensive ability on the floor goes through the roof compared to the other options we’ve looked at so far. Trayce Jackson-Davis gets the benefit of being the sole big man in the paint, giving him space to roll and post up without fearing help defenders.
This would also clear up driving lanes for the guards and provide more open threes. If Khristian Lander used a Jackson-Davis screen, he would have three very reliable kick out options in Rob Phinisee, Al Durham, and Jerome Hunter.
While the offensive upside of this lineup is unquestionable, the defensive side of the ball could be shaky. Again, 1-3 doesn’t have much size, and Jerome Hunter is not ready to shoulder the responsibility of guarding a lot of fours on defense. He has the potential to excel at the four eventually, but it’s asking a bit much of him right now.
This is an unlikely lineup given what Miller has shown us he is comfortable with, but it would be really fun to see, and I hope he uses it in some capacity.
