Indiana Basketball: Hoosiers should go after Figueroa

Figueroa put his name into the early entry list for the NBA Draft after the season, but on Monday night announced that he would be transferring from St. John’s.

He just completed an outstanding Junior year for the Red Storm and will be highly sought after. There are rumors out there that he would be able to get a waiver to play right away because of the impact of COVID-19 in New York.

If he is immediately eligible it would make him even more valuable to the next school he goes to. Even if he can’t he can be a big part of the teams 2021-22 season.

Figueroa led the Red Storm in scoring with 14.5 points per game and second on the team with 4.5 rebounds per game.

He is a big guard at 6’6″ and can be a matchup problem for opposing teams. He also can stretch the court as he shot 36.5% from deep.

Figueroa has one more year of eligibility left and would be a great bridge to the 2021 class when Archie Miller can bring in more guys to fill out the available scholarships.

This late in the recruiting cycle, it could be tough for Miller to bring in a four-year guy so Figueroa would be great to bring in.

The argument will be made that the Hoosiers need more size down low, but Miller likes players that can create from all over the court, and Figueroa definitely fits that criteria.

In the perfect world next year, the incoming freshman will be able to step right in and fill the holes the Hoosiers have, but that is tough to ask of so many young guys. So go after Figueroa gets a big-time scorer who can bring in experience and take some of the pressure off the young guys for a year.

This is a win-win for both parties, but just like all the other transfers that have come available Miller and IU will probably take a pass. But he shouldn’t.
