What will Galloway bring to IU?

Galloway is an athletic (please click that link, for your own good), 6’4″, 200-pound shooting guard. He is a tough and very competitive two-way player who can shut down a scorer on one end of the floor and then immediately run down the court to finish an alley-oop dunk.

Galloway is almost Larry Bird-like in the way that he gets to the bucket and makes plays. He has an excellent repertoire of post moves and layup packages that he uses to finish in the paint. Galloway is also an excellent secondary playmaker and that was the role in which he thrived in at Culver. On defense, Galloway sticks to his man like Elmer’s glue and is a hyper-competitive, hustle player.

One weakness in Galloway’s game is his jump shot. On a recent podcast with the Hoosier Hysterics,  Galloway said that his jumper is the biggest thing he is working on right now and that his form is not consistent. Galloway shot in the low 30’s from the three-point line this year.

I expect Galloway to start his Indiana basketball career buried deep in the rotation and potentially behind both Geronimo and Leal. Galloway will certainly see some playing time early in the year when Indiana tends to play mid-major teams, however, it will take some impressive performances early on for him to become a regular in the rotation this coming year.

After this season, Al Durham and Justin Smith are leaving and that will open up spots in the rotation for Galloway to fill. He will serve as a productive role player for Hoosiers teams over the next four years.

Pro Comparison: Donte DiVincenzo

Donte DiVincenzo is an excellent comparison for Trey Galloway. DiVincenzo has gotten his money (and Final Four MVP)  by being a hyper-competitive, athletic, jack-of-all-trades playmaker who will leave opponents wishing he was on their team.

Guys were yelling at DiVincenzo to take it down a notch at the NBA Combine. I repeat, he was too competitive for the NBA Combine. That’s the type of energy and toughness I hope to see from Trey Galloway when he pulls on the cream and crimson in six months’ time.

Galloway was Archie Miller’s first coup of the 2020 recruiting class and he certainly set the tone of for what turned out to be a remarkable, top 5 class in the B1G.
