Indiana Football: Should Hoosiers explore Ohio State transfer?
By Adam Childs
The Indiana football team is still looking to add talent to their 2020 team. Could they think about talking with an Ohio State transfer?
Ohio State running back/wide receiver Jaelen Gill entered the transfer portal and will be looking for somewhere new to play. He came to Ohio State as a highly recruited running back, but the Buckeyes switched him out to wide receiver.
He didn’t play much as a freshman and only got 63 snaps as a sophomore where he caught just five passes for 51 yards and a touchdown.
Gill was a great running back in high school, but his size made Ohio State move him to wide receiver. They didn’t think he could be an every-down back. He has great hands and has breakaway speed, so he can still be a very dangerous piece to someone’s offense.
Rivals have listed Texas and Boston College as potential landing spots for Gill, but nothing has been said about who has reached out. Gill has connections at the two schools, so they seem like logical possibilities.
But should this be a player the Hoosiers reach out to? Indiana should already be really good on offense with Michael Penix Jr. at quarterback, Ty Fryfogle and Whop Philyor headlining the receivers spot, Peyton Hendershot (if he makes it all the way back on the team) at tight end, and Stevie Scott at running back. They have a lot of weapons, but it’s never a bad thing to have more weapons.
Gill’s speed could be a great addition to an already potent lineup. The Hoosiers are already thin at running back after transfers, even though Sampson James decided not to transfer after putting his name in the portal.
Could Gill be a guy the Hoosiers could get for some spot duty at running back along with splitting him out at receiver? They could use him as a hybrid player and find matchup advantages with him.
Gill is not a guy that the Hoosiers have to have, but when someone with this much talent and potential becomes available you have to gauge interest.
Gill could choose to stay in the midwest and a place like Indiana could be a good landing spot for him.
