Indiana Football: Michael Penix expected to be ‘household name’ in 2020
By Alec Lasley
The Indiana football quarterback continues to receive recognition for his play and will come into 2020 with high expectations.
In a time of year when spring practice should be in full swing, the practice fields are empty and the locker rooms are closed. Despite that, the Indiana football program continues to receive praise and increased expectations for 2020.
Following the 2019 season, many people couldn’t wait for the next season to come. It was not only a record-breaking year for the Hoosiers, but the 2020 season could be an even better one.
If that were to happen, it will be because of the play of Michael Penix Jr. The Indiana quarterback comes into this offseason as the clear starter, following the transfer of Peyton Ramsey, and will look to exceed all of these preseason expectations.
Recently, Bleacher Report came out with a list of quarterbacks who could make a significant jump in 2020, much like LSU’s Joe Burrow did this past year.
"“When trying to find the next Joe Burrow, it’s worth highlighting at least one deep sleeper. Indiana’s Michael Penix Jr. is a great one to consider among those severely under the radar…..Penix may not be a household name yet, but if he can shake off the injury bug and keep playing at a high level, he’ll have a chance to become one of the top quarterbacks in the Big Ten, if not the country.”"
Michael Penix came into last year with a lot of expectations and while injuries derailed his season, he still showed the potential he had and also Indiana had with him under center.
In six starts in 2019, Penix threw for 1,394 yards with a 68.8 completion percentage, 10 touchdowns, and just four interceptions. With all of the talent that is returning on the offensive side of the ball for the Hoosiers, don’t be shocked if Penix makes a big jump up in production and leads Indiana to new heights.
