Indiana Basketball: Anthony Leal wins MaxPreps Indiana POY, ready to ‘hang banner’
By Alec Lasley
The 2020 Indiana basketball signee continues to receive national recognition for his play and is ready to bring that to the Hoosiers.
Despite the 2019 college basketball season ending abruptly, there is a lot of promise and excitement surrounding the Indiana basketball program next season. Whether it be ranked in pre-season top 25 polls or named as a team to watch, the Hoosiers will come into 2020 with high expectations.
The Hoosiers are not only expected to return nine of their top 10 scorers from this past season, but are also bringing in some extremely talented freshmen in the 2020 class.
One of those talented players is Anthony Leal. The four-star signee had his Bloomington South squad undefeated before the state tournament was cancelled, but that hasn’t stopped him from receiving a lot of national recognition.
While Indiana Mr. Basketball has yet to be announced, Anthony Leal received the MaxPreps Indiana Player of the Year award.
Leal has been one of the best in-state prospects during his four-year career and averaged nearly 19 points per game this season leading his team to a top 25 ranking in the nation.
Despite the sudden end to the season, he is focused on bringing one thing to the Indiana basketball program; a banner.
Leal spoke to Jim Gordillo of the Bloomington Herald-Times following the news of the cancellation of the state tournament.
"“My South team may not have been able to hang a banner, but if I get to work, maybe I can get to hang one. It may not be at South, it’ll be at IU. I just have to get to work and make myself better and keep going.”"
Part of a three-man recruiting class, Leal will be joined by Trey Galloway and Jordan Geronimo next season. Depending if Khristian Lander can reclassify, the Hoosiers will have one of the best recruiting classes in the country and have the goal of bringing a National Championship back to Bloomington before their careers are up.
