Indiana Football: 3 breakout candidates during spring practice
By Alec Lasley
3. Damarjhe Lewis
The incoming freshman class has a chance to be the class that helps Indiana get over the hump and finally win a bowl game, something Indiana hasn’t done since 1991. One of those freshmen is Damarjhe Lewis.
Ranked as the No. 679 prospect in the entire country, Lewis comes in with a lot of expectations on himself to be a contributor immediately. At a defensive line position that struggled to get consistent pressure on the quarterback last year, the Hoosiers need all the help they can get.
One of his best qualities is his speed and anticipation. Being able to get off of the line of scrimmage quickly gives him a tremendous advantage against the opposing offensive line.
With a team total of 27 sacks a season ago, in the middle of the Big Ten, the Hoosiers lack of pressure allowed for opposing quarterbacks to settle in the pocket and torch the Indiana secondary. With just five interceptions, last in the Big Ten, Lewis’s speed is a skill that most of the other IU d-lineman lack.
As just a freshman it’s always difficult to see the field consistently, but one year after Tiawan Mullen became a star, Lewis could be the next in line.
