Indiana Basketball: Road woes continue for Hoosiers in loss at Ohio State
By Adam Childs
The Indiana basketball team was looking for a season sweep of Ohio State on Saturday, but turnovers and poor shooting kept that from happening.
The Hoosiers traveled to Columbus on Saturday looking to pick up their second true road win of the year but came up short. The issues that have plagued the Hoosiers all year, were again present during the game on Saturday.
Indiana has struggled with turnovers and shooting and it was no different at Ohio State. The Hoosiers would finish the game with 13 turnovers and shoot just 45% from the field. They would hit seven of twelve threes, but they struggled to get open all game long.
After taking an early lead the Buckeyes went on a 9-0 run over a five minute plus stretch to take an eight-point lead. Ohio State would never relinquish that lead as the Hoosiers could never put together a run to get close. Indiana would never get closer than eight points the rest of the game.
For the second time this season the Buckeyes held Trayce Jackson-Davis to under ten points as the freshman forward scored just seven points on 2-6 shooting.
Devonte Green would lead the Hoosiers off the bench with 13 points as he hit three shots from deep, but could never really get the team going. Rob Phinisee added in 11 points but they were the only two Hoosiers to score in double figures.
The Hoosiers were also plagued by poor rebounding as they gave up 11 offensive rebounds to the Buckeyes as they got a ton of second-chance opportunities.
Kaleb Wesson led the way for Ohio State, recording a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. CJ Walker added 14 points and Justin Ahrens was huge off the bench hitting three big triples on his way to 11 points. Ahrens picked up the slack of missing DJ Carton, who recently took a leave from the team. Ahrens came in averaging just 3.1 points per game but was the spark plug the Buckeyes needed in Saturday’s game.
The loss dropped the Hoosiers to 15-7 and 5-6 in the Big Ten. It was also the Hoosier’s third straight loss after a big home win against Michigan State.
The Hoosiers will get a week off before they host in-state rival Purdue next Saturday trying to get back on track.
