Indiana Basketball: Hoosiers stumble late in loss to Maryland
By Alec Lasley
Indiana basketball loses a heartbreaker to No. 17 Maryland after a game-winner with 14.5 seconds left sealed its fait.
In a week in which Indiana basketball knocked off No. 11 Michigan State, the Hoosiers failed to back it up with another big time win, falling to No. 17 Maryland 77-76.
After a scorching hot start by Maryland in which they went 9-for-17 from three in the first half, jumping out to a 14-point lead at one point, the Hoosiers never went away and kept it as close as they could throughout the first half. Using a 16-3 run to start the second half, Indiana took its first lead a few minutes into the half and kept that lead up until 14.5 seconds left when Jalen Smith, who had a career-high 29 points, gave the Terrapins the lead. Indiana had one last look but Trayce Jackson-Davis, who finished with 13 points, missed a hook shot at the rim, giving the Terrapins the win.
The Hoosiers who had been in control for the 19 of the 20 minutes of the second half, made too many mistakes late, leading to a 7-0 run by Maryland over the final minute of the game.
Indiana stretched its lead to as much as eight points thanks to hot shooting by Jerome Hunter who had 12 points including hitting 3-of-6 from deep. On the afternoon, Indiana had its best shooting game of the season from three, going 9-of-19.
Devonte Green was one of four Hoosiers in double-figures and led Indiana with 16 points. Rob Phinisee chipped in 10 points and seven assists.
Despite going cold for most of the second half, Maryland finished 12-of-29 from three for the game, including a huge three by Aaron Wiggins with 57 seconds left to cut the IU lead to one. Anthony Cowan added 18 points for the Terrapins.
Indiana takes its 15-5 record on the road this week, traveling to Penn State and Ohio State.
