Indiana Basketball: Five bold predictions for this decade
By Adam Childs
5. Brad Stevens will be the head coach of the Hoosiers
This would be an absolute home run for the Indiana basketball program. Archie Miller may end up being a great coach and could be IU’s head guy for the rest of the decade but he still has a long way to go before he hits Brad Stevens’ accomplishments.
Stevens led Butler to back-to-back championship game appearances before the Bulldogs joined the Big East. Which, by the way, Stevens was instrumental in helping Butler get into that conference.
He parlayed his success with Butler into the Boston Celtics job, one in which he does seem very happy with. He has had pretty good success with the Celtics also and there has been no indication that he would want to leave.
But ten years is a long time and if he has another season like last year when he had to deal with Kyrie Irving and various other distractions he might think that he has done enough in the NBA.
The natural fit seems like it would be Indiana and Stevens coming back to the state he had so much success in. If the Hoosiers were to let Miller go or if he left, the very first call they should make should be to Stevens. The second and third call should probably be to Stevens also.
If this all happens at the right time, I think Stevens leaves and comes back to the Hoosiers. What better way to cement his legacy in college hoops than to bring the Hoosiers back to life and lead them to a Final Four or national championship. He has done a lot with a lot less and he would be the one that could bring it back to Bloomington.
Stevens will be on the Hoosiers sideline by 2030. It may be a bold prediction but it’s one that I think all IU fans would be ridiculously excited for.
