Indiana Basketball: Hoosiers quietly making moves in ESPN bracketology
By Alec Lasley
The Indiana basketball program continues to win, sitting at 11-1, but lack the national respect outside of one current projected bracket.
As non-conference play is slowly coming to an end, the Indiana basketball program has yet to fall to an out of conference opponent, but are still lacking a lot of national respect that they should deserve.
With one more non-conference game on the slate, Sunday against Arkansas, Indiana has yet another chance to bolster its tournament resume.
Currently with wins against No. 17 Florida State, UConn, and Notre Dame, nothing screams outstanding, but in a time in college basketball where everyone is losing, Indiana continues to win.
After starting the season on the outside looking in, when it came to multiple preseason NCAA Tournament brackets, the Hoosiers continue to fly under-the-radar.
On Monday though, the newest Joe Lunardi ESPN Bracketology was published and Indiana saw its highest projected ranking to this date.
Ranked as a six seed in the West region, they are projected as the top team on the six line as they are placed in Gonzaga’s region. Going up against a No. 11 Georgetown program, it would be a terrific first round matchup with all of the history between the two programs, as both are trying to rejuvenate the program as currently constructed. If the Hoosiers were to win, they would face either No. 3 Oregon or No. 14 New Mexico State.
The other teams on the six line are Kentucky, Penn State, and Wichita State.
As Indiana has failed to make an appearance in the AP Top 25, and currently sit at No. 30 receiving 45 votes, getting another quality non-conference win will give Indiana three, according to ESPN’s breakdown, something only 12 other teams in the country have.
As for Indiana’s final non-conference opponent, the Razorbacks are currently slated as one of the ‘last four in’ as a No. 12 seed.
