Indiana University Athletic Director Fred Glass set to retire
By Alec Lasley
The Indiana University Athletic Director made the announcement on Monday morning, with this academic year being his last.
In a shocking development, Indiana University Vice President and Athletic Director Fred Glass announced on Monday that he will be retiring from Indiana University at the end of the 2019-20 academic year.
Making huge strides during his tenure at Indiana, he has changed the culture around not only Indiana athletics, but also the university itself.
Since Glass’ arrival to Bloomington in 2009, he has done everything to get every athletic program up to a higher standard. In his time, he has seen 23 teams and 195 players win a conference championship, 45 players being named Big Ten Player of the Year, 588 players earn All-American honors, and three students named Big Ten Athlete of the Year, amongst many other awards as well.
Setting almost every program up for success over the past 10 years, he has seen it all pay off this year.
At the top of the list, he has helped rejuvenate the Indiana football program, having its best season in 26 years, see the men’s soccer program win back-to-back Big Ten regular season and tournament titles, have the women’s basketball program off to a 10-1 start with them receiving the highest ranking in program history, at No. 12 in the country, and a multitude of other accomplishments for the Indiana athletic department.
With all of the success and investment in winning, come the facilities that support each program.
The construction and update to Assembly Hall being at the top of the list, with Cook Hall as a nice addition, Memorial Stadium has undergone serious renovation as well with the new weight room and additional amenities added in just the past few years. In addition to those two major upgrades, the huge investment to the Indiana University golf course was unveiled this past year and the Mark Cuban Center for Sports Media and Technology, just two years ago, has been a major sight to see for all students and athletes.
So far the early names for a replacement have been floating around, such as Pat Kraft, an Indiana graduate who is currently at Temple, and Scott Dolson who was Glass’ deputy for his tenure and a candidate before Glass was hired for the position.
