Indiana Football: Top 2020 commit continues to rack up honors
By Alec Lasley
Indiana football’s top 2020 commit capped off a terrific high school career on Thursday night as he continued to add more honors to his name.
Tom Allen and the Indiana football program have made great strides in the recruiting ranks over the past three years, since Allen took over, winning multiple battles for top prospects over other Big Ten foes. While a lot of them have, and will, make an impact, there probably won’t be one bigger than 2020 wide receiver commit Rashawn Williams.
When Williams committed to Indiana in April, he became the highest rated commit in Indiana football history. Ranked No. 347 in the 247Sports composite rankings, Williams will look to be an immediate impact player on the offensive side of the ball with the departures of Donavan Hale and Nick Westbrook.
On Thursday night, Williams added another honor to his name as he was selected as the PSL Offensive Player of the Year.
The Detroit native has racked up 34 catches for 465 yards and five touchdowns during his senior season helping Martin Luther King High to a PSL Championship, and advancing to the D-II State Championship game as well.
King High coach Tyrone Spencer had this to say of Williams and the season he has put together.
"“When Rashawn is locked in mentally he can do whatever he wants to do on the football field,” coach Tyrone Spencer said. “He has good ball skills, big hands and great body control.”"
The 6-foot-1 Williams has all of the tools to be a top wide receiver in the Big Ten, and could have a breakout year immediately with the likes of Whop Philyor and Ty Fryfogle to play next to.
Not known for his breakaway speed, Williams will be a terrific possession receiver across the middle of the field, often times gaining the majority of his yardage after the catch. His ability to create space within the first five-to-seven yards off of the line of scrimmage is tremendous, and allows him a great amount of space in the open field.
Because of his physical play, he will be a major problem for defenses in the redzone. Though he won’t be your traditional jump ball receiver inside the twenty, his great footwork and hand-eye coordination makes him that lethal threat in the corners of the end zone.
After a flurry of commitments over the past week, Indiana’s 2020 class currently ranks No. 48 in the country with 18 commits.
