Indiana Football: 3 things to be thankful for this season
By Alec Lasley
2. Kalen DeBoer
In his first season as the offensive coordinator for Indiana, Kalen DeBoer has been magnificent in so many ways.
In previous years where Indiana was always towards the bottom of the conference when it came to offensive categories, DeBoer has changed the connotation that the Hoosiers have no star power.
Currently, Indiana is ranked first in the Big Ten in passing offense (306.1 ypg, 14th nationally) and third in total offense (436.5 ypg, 42nd nationally). Not only are the Hoosiers putting up yards, they are putting up points as well. DeBoer has been the mind behind the offense that has reached 30 points eight times this season, a program record, and in six-straight games at one point, which also shares an Indiana program record.
What has been even more exciting is that DeBoer is making players better. Look no further than Peyton Ramsey and how much different he has looked this season compared to last. Another name is Whop Philyor who is now one of the most explosive weapons in the Big Ten, if not the entire country, with 61 catches for 863 yards and three touchdowns.
One of DeBoer’s best tools is making sure he utilizes all of the weapons at his disposal. With seven players averaging at least one catch per game, there are four Hoosiers with at least 30 receptions on the season, and three with 40+ catches.
With all of the skill players on the offensive side of the ball, Kalen DeBoer has taken this offense, and team, to an entirely different level.
