Indiana currently sits at 7-2 on the year and just outside the AP top 25. But with the College Football Playoff rankings coming out tonight could they be included?

What: College Football Playoff Rankings

When: Around 9-9:30 EST (between Duke/Kansas and Michigan State/Kentucky basketball games)

Channel: ESPN

Indiana Hoosier fans have been waiting for this day for a long time. It’s opening night for college basketball and the Hoosiers have cautious optimism for the year.

But something else is happening tonight that no fans could have expected. The Hoosiers could be ranked in the initial College Football Playoff rankings. They currently sit at 27th in the Coaches Poll (second-most receiving votes) and 28th in the AP Poll (third-most receiving votes).

We all know that the committee’s rankings do not mirror those of the coaches or the AP voters. Everyone concentrates on the top and rightfully so, but for teams like Indiana, making it into the top 25 is a big accomplishment.

If you would have asked anybody at the beginning of the year, I doubt they would have thought this would even be a possibility. The Hoosiers have as good as chance as anyone near the bottom of the top 25 to be included.

The one thing the Hoosiers have going against them is they don’t have any “great” wins, but they have beaten the teams they should have and went toe-to-toe with Michigan State before they really hit their stride.

Even if the Hoosiers are not ranked this week, if they were to go out after their bye and beat Penn State they will definitely climb the polls. It is not inconceivable to think that if the Hoosiers do pull off the upset in two weeks, they could get into the top 20 and they would be right.

This is an exciting time for the Indiana fan base right now and it surprisingly isn’t just about basketball. The football team is trying to make a little history of their own and tonight we will find out if they have done that.
