Indiana Basketball: 3 key areas the Hoosiers must improve on from last season
By Alec Lasley
2. Turnovers
What is another way to struggle on the offensive end that goes along with missed opportunities at the free throw line? Turnovers, and the Hoosiers struggled all year to keep them to a minimum.
While 12.6 turnovers a game last season was grouped in with a lot of the other teams in the middle of the Big Ten, it was the assist-to-turnover ratio that killed the Indiana offense and efficiency.
At just a 1.05 ratio, the Hoosiers not only struggled to get easy looks but also struggled to have much of an offensive rhythm.
Already, the Hoosiers struggled to get points at an effective rate so coughing up the ball didn’t make it any easier. As a team, the defensive potential is there, but if Indiana continues to give the opponents easy buckets in transition off of turnovers, then there will be trouble in Bloomington due to the inconsistent play from the offense.
Why I think the turnovers will go down? Rob Phinisee. Assuming the Hoosiers get a healthy Phinisee for the entire season, that will already decrease the turnovers dramatically. As someone who averaged just a hair over one turnover per game last season, Phinisee’s ability to stay on the court will alter the turnover rate all year.
With the additional pieces of Al Durham and Armaan Franklin becoming more on ball guards, that alleviates the amount of times Devonte Green will have to run the offense.
