Indiana Baskeball: OG Anunoby receives ring, gets win in NBA opener
By Alec Lasley
Former Indiana basketball forward OG Anunoby was front and center in the NBA season opener on Tuesday as he received his Championship ring and got a win.
It was a great night for the Indiana basketball program as one former player, OG Anunoby, received his NBA Championship ring from last year.
The great tradition for the NBA season opener is also the unveiling of the Championship banner at the respective title winner’s arena, and the Raptors carried on that tradition last night before kicking off the opener against the New Orleans Pelicans.
It was a dramatic offseason for the reigning NBA Champs as the Kawhi Leonard sweepstakes took him out west to the Los Angeles Clippers, with Danny Green following suit to the Lakers. With all of that behind them, a new season was upon them as well as Anunoby.
With no more Leonard or Green, Anunoby’s role will be increased dramatically not only on the defensive end, but also on offense.
The former first-round pick missed the entire postseason run last year with an emergency appendectomy so Anunoby wants to prove he can be that replacement. Early on last night, he showed it.
Scoring the first field goal in the 2019-20 season for the Raptors, Anunoby nailed a three at the top of the arc to get things started and went on to have a solid opener scoring 11 points and grabbing seven rebounds in a career-high 36 minutes, in the 130-122 OT win.
With only 13 career games of 10+ shot attempts in his 142 career games, that number is sure to increase and be a normal number each night moving forward, as he finished with 12 attempts on Tuesday.
With Pascal Siakam and Kyle Lowry expected to lead the way in the scoring column, Fred VanVleet and Anunoby should be the next two players when it comes to scoring for the Raptors this season.
