A handful of former Indiana football players were selected in the XFL Draft as they look to continue their football careers.

It’s the newest stint for the XFL and this time it has hopes to flourish and stay around for a long time, providing a sort of ‘secondary league’ to the NFL. Over the span of the past two days, the eight teams set to begin play in early 2020 filled out their rosters in their draft.

For the draft, it was divided into five ‘phases’. The phases were broken down into skill position players, offensive lineman, defensive lineman and linebackers, defensive backs, and then finally specialists.

There were hundreds of players who were set to see their names be drafted and for five former Indiana players, they received great news.

After multiple Hoosiers went undrafted in their respective available rounds, the first Hoosier off the board was Tegray Scales to the Dallas Renegades.

During his time in Bloomington, Scales had 324 total tackles, 46 tackles for loss, 17 sacks and eight interceptions, and was the leader of a defense that helped the Hoosiers to two bowl games.

Scales is a perfect example of a player set to play in the XFL. Trying for another shot with an NFL team, Scales has spent time with the Los Angeles Rams, Indianapolis Colts, and most recently the Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL after going undrafted in the 2018 NFL Draft.

After the specific positional rounds were up, teams were allowed to draft any position player which resulted in four other Hoosiers getting drafted. WR J-Shun Harris (New York Guardians), LB Robert McCray (New York Guardians), DE Bobby Richardson (Tampa Bay Vipers), and OL Andrew McDonald (St. Louis Battlehawks) were all selected in Wednesday’s rounds.

As it stands now, teams have 71 players on the roster but will need to cut it down to 52 before the start of the XFL season begins in February.
